500 KB is a useful starting budget when a small target makes details too soft. Many photos can fit through quality adjustment alone, though very large or detailed images may still need resizing. There is no fixed quality-to-size formula.
The 500 KB preset is selected for you. For JPG and WebP, the tool starts at your chosen quality and searches down to a 40% floor. If the file still exceeds 500,000 bytes, it reduces dimensions in bounded steps. PNG uses dimension changes because its lossless encoder ignores quality. Each result says whether the target was met.
For document screenshots, zoom into the smallest text before downloading. A file can be under the limit yet unusable if the letters are blurred. Raise the target or upload a more tightly cropped original when readability matters.
