What to expect at 1 MB

A 1 MB target allows more detail than smaller presets, making it a reasonable choice for larger photos intended for screens. It is still not a substitute for keeping an original for print or editing. Large camera images may be resized to reach this budget.

/ 02

How the target is reached

The 1 MB preset is selected for you. For JPG and WebP, the tool starts at your chosen quality and searches down to a 40% floor. If the file still exceeds 1,000,000 bytes, it reduces dimensions in bounded steps. PNG uses dimension changes because its lossless encoder ignores quality. Each result says whether the target was met.

/ 03

Before you submit or publish

We interpret 1 MB as 1,000,000 bytes, which is below a 1 MiB (1,048,576-byte) limit too. If your source is already under the target, it may still be optimized at the selected quality; the downloaded file will never be larger than the original.

A detailed photo for an attachment

Select your original with the 1 MB preset active. Start at 80% quality; the compressor only reduces dimensions if its bounded quality search cannot fit the budget.

Before you download: Review final dimensions and fine textures. A result of 980,000 bytes is under this preset, while 1,020,000 bytes exceeds it even though it fits a 1 MiB allowance.

A FEW USEFUL DETAILS

Good to know.

Does 1 MB mean 1,000,000 or 1,048,576 bytes?

This preset uses 1,000,000 bytes. The larger value is 1 MiB. Meeting this preset therefore also fits a 1 MiB maximum.

Will a 1 MB result be suitable for printing?

File size does not establish print quality. Check pixel dimensions against the intended print size, and keep your original for print or editing. This tool is designed for screen images rather than archival workflows.

Can I compress several large photos to 1 MB each?

Yes, within the batch limits: 30 files, 30 MB per file and 120 MB total, with a maximum of 24 megapixels per image. Each gets a separate target; the ZIP is not limited to 1 MB.
